Yarn Bombing this Saturday!

As you may already know, I've been invited to do a yarn bombing for a local arts event this Saturday, called Art on Lark.

A couple of weeks ago, I went to take photographs and measure this fence and its surroundings, trying to see what I could cover or embellish with knitting and crocheting.

Parts of the fence are very ornate  so I am going to leave them alone.

There are also some chairs and a table in the front yard of the building, ideal for weaving strands of yarn through

so Crafty Girl and I went down the other day and got started with it.
Also, the signpost needed something....

Art on Lark is this Saturday, June 9th, from 10 to 5. I will have a table right in front the Lark Street BID office, with some yarn and needles, so we can keep knitting. There are trees and a couple of bike racks. If you have yarn leftovers or partial skeins, bring those too. The possibilities are endless! Oh yes, and a yarn sewing needle and a pair of scissors are definitely helpful too.

Come knit in public with me, to kick off Knit in Public Week, and let's do some yarn bombing while we're at it. I have permission from the organizers to keep going beyond what I'm already attaching to the fence before the event starts.

See you Saturday!!

a really quick update

I have been wanting to write about so many things but because so many things have been happening I have not had time to write!

1) the yarn yard sale was a blast and a success, and I thank everyone for coming out and helping out in a myriad of ways. Too bad I now don't have enough stash left for another sale because I really love seeing everyone.

2) my parents have been here for 2 weeks, and they are here for another week. Last Sunday was Tall Son's college graduation and we are now the extremely proud parents of a graduate with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Rochester, NY, who has a job lined up. Here's a goofball picture I love and another one with my parents.

3) this weekend I will be at the Massachusetts sheep and woolfest at Cummington, with Sliver Moon Farm. I hope to see some of you there. Yarn dyeing had come to an almost complete standstill over the last couple of months but this week I managed to dye a few skeins. I will bring watercolors sock yarn.

4) I've been invited to do a yarn bombing downtown and need to go knit for that.

Bye!!

Yarn Yard Sale tomorrow!!!

It's here! The yarn yard sale is almost here.

I've sorted my stash into KEEP and SELL.

I have about 18 bins of yarn for you to pick through. I tried to spread it out a little. :)

Each bin is labeled with a price, like $2.- or $3.- or $5.-.

There is one small  $1.- bin....it's the acrylic, what can i say.

There's also a small amount of cotton. Most of the yarn however is all natural fiber, wool, merino, alpaca, and blends thereof. I have a bunch of sweater quantities, and cones, and kits.

This week, I sorted all my pattern leaflets, and came up with a whole binder full of patterns I'm giving away. Today I am going over my books one more time and pricing them. I love my knitting library and probably won't sell a lot of it. But there will be some free books, and everything else will be priced between $5 and $10.

As far as Periwinkle Sheep yarns go, there are seconds/discontinueds/orphans and experiments. Everything from worsted to dk to fingering and a couple skeins of laceweight.

I DID NOT LABEL EACH INDIVIDUAL SKEIN. There will be notepaper and pencils on each table, and we will work with the honor system. You will have biodegradable plastic bags available for your convenience, or use your own. Please write down how many skeins from each price category you are getting; it will make cash out easier.

Three wonderful friends are helping me tomorrow, and they will be happy to assist you.

Please note that this is a yard sale and cash only. However I will accept personal checks from people I know. :)

Yarn Yard Sale
9 am to 12 noon

at 32 Harris Ave
Albany, NY 12208

enter the yard through the driveway on the right.

PS: My friend Jody will be here, to help with the sale. Jody wrote a beautiful shawl pattern and will have it for sale...in case you are trying to figure out what to do with all that fingering weight yarn you bought. :)

2012 Yarn Yard Sale

I've settled on a date.

The Yarn Yard Sale of 2012 will take place on May 5th, from 9 am to 12 noon. Short and sweet. If it rains it will be inside our enclosed front porch.

I've started to sort yarn, little by little, as I am able. So I will give you updates periodically until May 5th arrives.

Please note that I have no acrylics, and almost no cotton (in case you are wondering whether to come or not). I have only wool and wool blends, as in wool blended with alpaca or mohair.

Generally speaking, there will be yarn in every price category, from free to barely marked down for the really nice fibers.
I also have some all natural dk weight alpaca from a farm that is gorgeous and cream colored...I could dye that for you in a custom color if you'd like.

That's all I got for today. ;)

stash ruminations

I'm thinking about it.

I may just go for it.

Another Yarn Yard Sale.

First Saturday in May (raindate second Saturday in May).

Should I?

April 1st was Flash your Stash day on Ravelry, and I have been thinking. I love having yarn around, that's not news. I have always loved picking out yarn, imagining what I will do with it, I've designed with it, I've dyed it. And yes I enjoy buying yarn, especially at Local Yarn Shops.

Since the beginning of the year, I have not bought any yarn at all. I am Cold Sheeping (like going cold turkey, but related to knitting it is a sheep), in an effort to use up what I have. I have never come out and said this, because I love my LYSs a lot and I want them to stay in business and I want to keep supporting them. The Stash I have is a personal thing, the one aside from the Professional Stash. So far they've kind of lived side by side. Now I am coming out of my private sphere and saying that I think I have come to a point where the Personal Stash is becoming a burden to me.

I don't like that it takes up so much room in my house.
I don't like that it takes up so much room in my head.
I am tired of having to think about that I will do with it all.
I need to knit with Periwinkle Sheep yarns much more than I have been.
I am at a different phase in my life than I was when I first bought a lot of these yarns.

It is time to find, sort, set up, and move it out. First there will be a Yarn Yard Sale, and whatever won't go then will be donated or sold on ravelry.

Yes I will keep some of it, of course. I am keeping the yarn that is the most precious to me for various reasons.
The rest is going to be set free. 'cause I have a feeling it's tired of being cooped up in all those bins.

I'm fine

Three weeks into recovery after surgery, and I am very VERY slowly getting there. I can now walk almost a whole block and back before I get exhausted.

I'm at a point now where I have to be very patient with myself, because I want to start doing things again, but then my body says. Oh no, chickie, we didn't go through all this only to have you mess it all up again.

So I'm behaving. Also, I've been getting pretty good at knitting while in the supine position. I can't sit for very long, and whatever sitting time I have I use for meals and windows of time at the computer.

While in a friendly competition in my rav group where we are trying to knit up 12,000 yards of yarn from Feb.15 thru Mar.31, I'm working  on several things at the same time. (You know me and my multiple WIP universe.)

Altogether, I made 19 Elf Hats for gifts. (Some of the ends needed yet to be woven in as of the first picture).

Meanwhile I am working on a blanket, which I'm not sure I'll keep. May be for donation.

And in other fun news, I've been asked to spearhead a yarn bombing for an arts event in a downtown business district in June. I think I may have to practice on a little cherry tree I have in the front yard, don't you?
