let me run this by you

One of my long-time and beloved customers, Betty, requested a color in my Periwinkle Sheep watercolors sock yarn. The 80% merino, 20% nylon yarn is very soft yet durable, and it takes on color just so. Even bright colors have manners in this yarn, and when she asked for a flame orange with a deep red, I tried this:

Soon as it dried, I balled up a skein and did a quick test knit for a sock:

It reminds me of the flowers of a Chinese Lantern plant.
What do you think?

  1. Well, you know my feelings on the color orange (away! away from me, thou foul beast!) but if I mentally convert that to a dark green it's exceptionally pretty, so if orange is her bag, I think it's a winner!

  3. I love it and am definately reminded of the Chinese Lantern plant. Sadly our plant didn't get many lanterns this year, I blame the rain. I think Betty is going to be 1 Happy Knitter!!! Great job as always Karin!
    :-)

Sorry if this is a double post, my page just went crazy!

  4. I think it's lovely, but I'm betting she wanted a deeper, redder orange. Don't know why, but that's what I pictured when I read the description.

  5. Alison-
I was going to warn you about the orangey-red coming up! Hope it didn't make you too dizzy...

Thanks everyone for your comments. :)

  6. I love it! But then the brighter the better when it comes to color for me. And yes, it does look like the Chinese lantern plant. All the better!

  7. It's an orange I would knit with, for what it's worth. (hint: ain't too many of those). I especially like how the red just pokes its head out now and then.

  8. Hi Karin,
I think I didn't express myself well enough. I really did want a deeper red with the orange running through it lightly. Communication is tough, I know. Hope you're okay with this.

  9. I think it's beautiful. It is a very happy celebration of the yummy fall colors. Orange is hard. I think you pulled it off well. It reminds me of the strands of natural carnelian that I have been working into my necklaces lately.

  10. Orange is not a color I gravitate towards, but this is absolutely gorgeous! Plus you had to go and start knitting it up, which makes it fairly irresistable! Of course, I already have two fabulous skeins of your yarn to knit up, and that sunny yellow is going on the needles as soon as I can manage it.
